James Thurber

James Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1894. Moving east, he became a staff writer on the New Yorker magazine in 1927, honing his style and sharpening his wit through his work as a journalist. His drawings were first published in 1929. He continued to write for the New Yorker until shortly before his death in 1961. By this time, he had found acclaim as an incisive writer, as a dramatist and as a gifted cartoonist. He is best known as the creator of Waler Mitty.
